Repost basics
What Does Repost Mean on TikTok? What It Does and Who Sees It
Quick answer
On TikTok, a repost means sharing someone else’s video with your friends and followers without making a new post. The video can appear in their For You feeds, labeled as a repost with your profile photo and nickname, and it’s added to the Reposts tab on your profile. The creator’s original video doesn’t change, and you can remove your repost at any time.
What happens when you repost a TikTok
- It reaches your network. TikTok can show the video in your friends’ and followers’ For You feeds.
- It carries your name. The video is labeled as a repost with your profile photo and nickname.
- It’s added to your profile. Reposted videos collect in the Reposts tab, next to your own videos.
- People can reply. Anyone who can see your repost can reply to it, and your comment privacy settings don’t apply to those replies.
- The original stays the creator’s. Views and engagement count on their video; you aren’t uploading a copy.
TikTok reposts the moment you tap, with no confirmation step. That makes it quick to use, and easy to do by accident.
Repost vs. share, duet, stitch, and like
| Action | What it does | Shows on your profile? |
|---|---|---|
| Repost | Recommends the video to your friends and followers | Yes, in the Reposts tab |
| Share | Sends a link to a specific person, chat, or app | No |
| Duet / Stitch | Creates a new video of your own using the clip | Yes, as your own post |
| Like | Shows appreciation and saves it to your Liked tab | In the Liked tab, which you can make private |
| Favorite | Saves the video for you to find later | In your Favorites tab |
In short, a repost is a public recommendation, a share is a private message, and a like or favorite is mostly for you.
Who can see your reposts?
It depends on your account type, according to TikTok’s Help Center:
- Public account: anyone can see your reposts, any repost text, and replies on your profile.
- Private account: only your followers can see your reposts, on your profile and in their For You feeds.
TikTok documents no “only me” setting for reposts, so don’t treat Repost as a way to save something privately; use Favorite for that. Our guide on how to hide reposts on TikTok covers your options.
A repost isn’t delivered to every follower, either. It’s a recommendation to TikTok’s feed, so some followers will see it and many won’t.
Does TikTok notify people when you repost?
TikTok’s Help Center doesn’t say whether creators are notified when someone reposts their video, and the inbox filters it lists (likes and favorites, comments, Add Yours, mentions and tags) don’t include reposts. Reports from users and tech sites differ.
The practical answer: assume your repost can be seen. It carries your profile photo and nickname into your followers’ feeds, so anyone who knows you, including the creator if they follow you, may notice it.
Why people remove old reposts
Reposts build up quietly. A video that made sense to share a year ago can look odd on your profile today. Common reasons to clean up include:
- Accidental press-and-hold reposts while scrolling.
- Changing your niche, brand, or job, and wanting your profile to match.
- Old jokes, trends, or opinions you no longer want attached to your name.
- Wanting to keep a profile focused on your own videos.
Can you undo a repost?
Yes, at any time. Open the video, tap Share, then Delete repost (or Remove repost). Removing it also deletes any replies to it. Here are all the ways to remove a repost.

Frequently asked questions
What does it mean when someone reposts your TikTok?
They recommended your video to their own friends and followers. It can appear in those people’s For You feeds labeled with the reposter’s name, and it’s listed in the reposter’s Reposts tab. Your video and its stats stay on your profile.
What does “reposted” mean on a TikTok in my feed?
Someone you’re connected to reposted that video, so TikTok showed it to you with their profile photo and nickname. It wasn’t necessarily made by them.
Is reposting the same as sharing on TikTok?
No. Reposting recommends a video to your followers and adds it to your profile. Sharing sends a link to a specific person, chat, or app and doesn’t appear on your profile.
Does reposting a TikTok help the creator?
It can. A repost puts the video in front of your friends and followers, which can bring the creator extra views and engagement on the original post.
Can I remove all my reposts at once?
Not in the TikTok app, which removes reposts one at a time. On iPhone, RepostWipe can scan your profile and remove the reposts you select in bulk.
